Police have made 16 arrests in connection with the terrifying armed robbery suffered by reality star Kim Kardashian. French officers have rounded up 16 suspects in a series of dawn raids, arresting members of a veteran gang, aged between 50 and 72.
Most of the people arrested, during raids in Paris and the south of France, are understood to have long criminal records, and one was described as a “major thug”. They are all facing charges relating to the break in of the reality star’s apartment in Paris last year, in which she was tied up and robbed at gunpoint. Robbers got away with millions of pounds of her jewellery.
However, police have now made a breakthrough following DNA results, which found evidence on a piece of tape which had been used to gag the social media loving celebrity. The DNA was found to match that of a renowned criminal who is already known to have been involved in several armed robberies. He, along with the others who have been arrested, can be held for 96 hours under French law, before they must be either charged or released.
One of those arrested has been named only as Pierre B. He is understood to be a 72 year old career criminal who lives in Grasse, in the south of France. Three women and two diamond dealers are also among those who have been arrested. It is believed that the female suspects had followed Ms Kardashian around the French capital before the robbery took place.
The investigation is still continuing, with homes of suspects being searched and raids taking place at other premises around Paris, including a jewellery store. These latest arrests follow months of surveillance by French officials, including phone taps. One theory police are examining is whether Ms Kardashian’s jewels ended up in Belgium.
