Five men and a woman have been placed under arrest on suspicion of terrorism after police carried out a series of dawn raids across Britain.
Police could be seen standing guard outside a number of properties on a foggy Britsh morning. Officers say that while a terror attack was not imminent, the group may have been plotting one.
Anti terror officers said the arrests were a “significant” move in the fight against terrorism. Bomb disposal officers were also called to Derby, in what was described as a “precautionary measure”.
It is understand that the six arrested have links to international terrorism, although no detail was given bout what other countries could be involved. Officers are now searching a number of properties in London, Burton and Derby, while those arrested are being questionned by police.
Police have reveled that four men, all from Derby, and aged 22, 27, 35 nd 36 have been detained. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man from Burton and a 32-year-old woman from London have also been arrested. All are under suspicion of engaging in the preparation of an act of terrorism.
One of the men had been working on the floor in a chicken factory in Derbyshire when police stormed in and arrested him. One worker said that the man involved had been a popular member of staff and that CCTV footage showed him being held down by officers as he was detained.
The investigation involved dozens of officers who moved in at dawn in stealth raids, and is being led by the North East counter terrorism unit. One resident in Derby said they had the “bomb squad, army and police” swarming all over his street. He added that he had noticed an increased police presence in the area over the past few weeks. The arrests come as many city centres are on alert for the potential threat of terrorist attacks during Christmas events.
