A desperate mother ran after her car when she saw it being stolen – with her 10 month old baby still inside. The thief stole the silver Volvo estate car after the baby’s mother popped into a shop in Cambridge.
She gave chase shouting at the thief to stop. He continued for around 100 yards, before getting out and into another car. The baby, who was still strapped into their car seat, was found safe and well, without realising what had happened.
Police say they are now searching for a man, who was a passenger in a blue car, which parked up just before the silver vehicle was stolen.
Found safe and well
A spokesperson for Cambridge police force said that the car was taken in daylight, in just a matter of seconds, by a thief who had not realised that there was a baby inside. Thankfully, the child was soon reunited with his mother, but police described the theft as “deeply disturbing,” adding that it could have had serious consequences.
Police are urging anyone who saw the theft, or who may have information to get in touch. The mum had parked up outside a store on London Road, in Kimbolton at 3.30pm when the incident happened. She took the decision to leave the baby in the car seat while she briefly popped in to purchase something. It is believed that the thief spotted his chance when he saw the car parked outside, and decided to get out of the passenger seat of the vehicle he was travelling in.
